Introduction to Three Horizons

Working with the future

Futures practices help us take action in complex situations where the past is not a good guide to the future. Scenarios, roadmaps and pathways are widely used approaches that allow us to combine our ability to act with an appreciation of uncertainty.

Introduction to Three Horizons

Three Horizons (3H) is a simple framework to help guide conversations about the future towards meaningful action.

Three Voices

In this video, we explain how to recognize these voices and see the value each one brings, and how they might work together to navigate conversations about the future.

Use Case Library

This curated collection, facilitated by our members at Impact Amplified, offers glimpses into the real-world applications of the framework. By navigating these examples, you can see the practical nuances and adaptability of the Three Horizons across various contexts.

What is Regenerative?

Each of us has a vital role to play in ensuring society can thrive at every level.

Exponential Goals

Changes can happen rapidly when everyone settles on one approach. We can then move along a learning curve of exponential change, where new technology improves its performance rapidly, lowering costs and increasing adoption by society.

Three Stages of Change

Transformational change in the patterns of our lives typically involves three stages: emergence, diffusion and reconfiguration.

Tipping points and cascades

A tipping point is a place where a small intervention can trigger a large response, sending a system into a qualitatively different future state, triggering a rapid cascade of change throughout the sector and beyond.

Causal Loops

Modeling a situation with causal loops helps us see how it behaves over time, understand the dynamic effect of policies, and see what interventions might be most effective.

Accelerating Transitions Framework

System transitions generally happen in three stages: emergence, diffusion, and reconfiguration. At each stage, different policies and various kinds of international cooperation are likely to be effective in accelerating the transition.

Dilemma Navigation

In embarking on making change, especially transformational change towards a radical goal, we inevitably plunge into conflicts, contradictions and oppositional polarities. Dilemma navigation creates a space in which all voices are brought into the room and opposing values both have something to contribute to a new innovative solution.
