Diagrams that aren’t boring: The Doughnut

Possibly the only doughnut that’s good for us.

The Doughnut is a playfully serious approach to framing humanity’s 21st century challenge to meet the needs of all within the means of the planet.

This is a doughnut. Not the sugary kind, but one that is exceedingly good for us if we are able to digest it well.

It takes the planetary boundaries model, which is also shown in this section, and integrates it with social impacts.

Traditionally, many have seen the environment as being separate from society, but in fact the two are intimately connected. For example, climate change is affecting the availability of basic resources for a healthy society, such as food and water.

So while one concentric ring focuses on our ecological ceiling, ensuring we do not overshoot planetary boundaries, the other represents our social foundation, ensuring no one is left falling short on life’s essentials.

Responsible business leaders are incorporating social and environmental impacts into their strategies, recognizing they cannot separate themselves from the world around them.

For business to engage with the doughnut properly, watch Business Meets the Doughnut. It’s the best place to start.
